Why do bad things happen to good and bad people?

Genesis 50:18-20
"Then his brothers also came and fell down before him and said, "Behold, we are your servants." But Joseph said to them, "Do not be afraid, for am I in God's place? And as for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive."

If you don't believe in a God who directs the course of human history, then you can only attribute Joseph's wisdom to luck and good attitude. If you believe in Joseph's God, then you see the wisdom of ages, that He works in every situation for the good of those who love him.

Joseph was beaten and sold in to slavery to prepare the way for his family's salvation in egypt during the coming drought that only God could foresee. When did Joseph decide that God intended good to come out of this horrible situation. When did he decide to forgive his brothers.
